Embedded Boundaries - From Raw STL to Free-Surface Simulation Without Meshing

Posted on July 21, 2026 by Nicolás Diego Badano

Meshing is often the most time-consuming part of a CFD project. I'm experimenting with embedded boundaries (EB): take the raw STL, drop it into a Cartesian grid, and let the solver cut the cells. The video shows a weir going from a raw STL to a running free-surface simulation without touching snappyHexMesh.

Block-Structured Adaptive Mesh Refinement - The Other School of AMR

Posted on July 7, 2026 by Nicolás Diego Badano

Back in 2022 I posted about Adaptive Mesh Refinement in OpenFOAM. Lately I've been exploring the other school of AMR: block-structured refinement. There is no meshing step at all: the domain is covered by nested levels of Cartesian grid patches; whole blocks appear and disappear as they track the flow.
